<title>King wrestling program improving</title>
<link>http://matkings.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=14</link>
<description>10:00 PM PST on Wednesday, December 19, 2007

By GERALD TANG
The Press-Enterprise

Most lawyers probably treat their free time as a scarce resource.

For his leisure, Harlan Kistler enjoys building the Riverside King wrestling
program one practice at a time. The fruits of that process likely will be on
display in Kistler's second season as head coach.

Junior 125-pounder Daniel Horcasitas already loudly announced his presence
earlier this month with first-place finishes in the Carter Invitational and
Edison Bash at the Beach.

Rounding out King's Fab Five are Kaylin Goodsite (135 pounds), Josh Lee
(heavyweight) and the Juarez brothers, Daniel (145) and Joshua (130).

The Wolves will need improvement from their nine other weight classes if they
hope to contend for the Ivy League title against senior-laden Riverside La
Sierra, the three-time defending champion.

At least the goal is in sight for Kistler, who was asked in 2001 by then-coach
Henry Campo to help teach technique.

There were 18 wrestlers in the program that first year. Now the number is close
to 80.

&amp;quot;Five years ago, it was horribly frustrating because no one had a background in
wrestling,&amp;quot; Kistler said. &amp;quot;I left Iowa as an assistant at the best wrestling
program in the nation, and here were these boy scouts and baseball players. They
had no clue about wrestling. They were super polite and nice. But they had a
hard time with the concept of pounding somebody into the mat -- when they smack
you, smacking them right back.&amp;quot;

Kistler was a Big Ten champion at the University of Iowa under legendary coach
Dan Gable. He began his collegiate career at UCLA, where he won a conference
championship, then transferred to Arizona State after the wrestling program at
UCLA was cut. He also was a Pac-10 champion at ASU.

Kistler now owns a small law firm specializing in personal injury cases.

After long days of depositions and trials, Kistler, along with six other
volunteer coaches, runs regimented practices for the Wolves. Wind sprints,
rope-climbing and weightlifting are the norm. For drills, the coaches break down
situations on the mat, such as how to counter-attack when an opponent shoots for
one leg.

The methodical approach works well for the program at King, where Kistler said
the typical wrestler is a sophomore with no previous experience.

Young but Ready

Perennial Mountain View League champion Corona Centennial returns five wrestlers
who placed at last year's CIF-Southern Section finals. Three of them are only
sophomores.

Seniors Randy Tinoco and Carlos Tafoya will be counted on for leadership, not
that this group needs much prodding. The Huskies went 10-0 last weekend at the
Fontana Kaiser dual meet tournament.

&amp;quot; It's very helpful having the young wrestlers with us,&amp;quot; said Tinoco, who
qualified for state last year at 103 pounds. &amp;quot; They know what's going on, and
they know they have to push the team.&amp;quot;

Best Against the Best

With 19 straight league titles (and still counting), Temecula Valley isn't
resting on its laurels. The Golden Bears crossed the state line this week to
compete at the Reno Tournament of Champions, which draws elite entries from
around the country.

The Bears, who finished eighth out of 87 teams last year, will wrap up the
tournament today.

In the big picture, the Bears return five state qualifiers from last year. Jake
Meredith headlines the group as a 171-pounder expected to challenge for a state
title. The senior has drawn recruiting interest from Air Force, Cal State
Fullerton, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield and UC Davis, according to Coach
Arnold Alpert.
